CHAPTER 10

After leaving the art gallery, Romeo and I continued walking around town until he was dragging behind, clearly exhausted.

“Getting tired, Rome?” I asked him, looking down at the poor pup who was resting on his haunches, huffing. The cool breeze blew through the tuft of hair on his head.

After a short rest, I urged him to continue at a leisurely pace. We stopped by one of my favorite coffee shops, the Sweet Treats Café, and I grabbed a cappuccino and a glazed doughnut. Back outside, I took a seat on a park bench, waiting for my cappuccino to cool down a little.

It was an interesting fact that Lynn Spiller and Flora Roxbury had matching tattoos on their wrists—orange foxes with several tails. Of course, they were best friends, so it wasn’t that surprising. Who knew how long they’d had those tattoos?

I went back on my phone and returned to Lynn Spiller’s website. Clicking on a few links, I found the “About” page, which featured the history of the website. Scanning the story behind why Lynn had started the site, I noticed a familiar name: Flora Roxbury.

“Flora was part owner of the website?” I asked aloud. Now that was interesting.

I took a cautious sip of my cappuccino and grimaced. Still too hot. I dug into my glazed doughnut instead.

As I was finishing my doughnut, I saw a familiar man walking toward me, holding hands with a mousy young woman.

Ted Lancaster waved hello. “Denny, right?” he asked me.

“That’s right,” I said warmly.

“You remember my girlfriend Ivy?” He motioned to the thin, young woman next to him. She waved to me with a shy smile.

“The girl in the witch costume,” I said.

“That’s right,” she said softly with a giggle.

“Say, I was wondering if you knew about Flora’s best friend, Lynn,” I said to Ted. “The one you said you thought had been arguing with her?”

“Oh yeah, that woman is a piece of work.” He rolled his eyes.

“Why do you say that?” I asked, taking another sip of my drink, glad it was no longer scalding my mouth.

Ted looked around a moment, as if he were hesitant to talk to me about this in public.

“Mind if we sit down?” he asked.

I nodded and scooted over on the bench. Ted sat next to me, and his girlfriend took the spot on the end. Romeo pranced over to her, and she bent down and rubbed him behind the ears.

“So, why did you say that Lynn is a piece of work?” I asked Ted.

“She’s getting away with highway robbery!”

“Yeah, no kidding. Three thousand dollars for a single art piece? I know they’re framed, but that’s wild.”

“It’s not just that…it’s the fact that she…”

“She’s what?”

His voice was quiet when he finally spoke: “She isn’t an artist.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, taken aback. “Did someone else create those paintings?”

“Not someone else. Something else.”

“You mean…”

“All of her art is computer-generated,” he said, shaking his head in disgust. “She passes it off as her own handmade art, selling the ‘originals’ for thousands and raking in even more from all of the prints she sells.
